Mormaer was a position of rank in the old Celtic society. There is a similar word in Gaelic - morar which means a lord. Mormaer is pronounced where the middle m has a “v” sound as mawr-vir. It is equated roughly with the term Earl and its Norse equivalent Jarl. Another term used in the early Celtic society, was Toiseach which means leader. Both of these terms are found in the Gaelic notes in the Book of Deer which is a 10th Century Gospel manuscript. These notes give a unique insight into the structure of Scottish society at that time.
